RecordTypeId and Insufficient Privileges

We have a model based on Case and one of the fields is RecordTypeId. When a case is created it is a Record Type "New" and then the operator changes it based on the details of the case to another record type. Problem is that the field value is a link that if you click you get the "insufficient privileges salesforce" message, even when the user is an admin. If you click the little "edit" icon it works as it should by bringing up the list of available record types. We have hidden the link using CSS but if you click the name of the record type the problem still exists. Thanks in advance.
