Is there any kind of ‘rate limiting’ that occurs on your SQL connection (i.e. similar to Salesforce’s API governor limit)? This may be your issue.
To look into this, open the Network tab in your Developer Console. Select the ‘XHR’ responses. Then refresh your page. Then look for the apexremote response and then examine the response itself.
